Château Coutet in Saint-Emilion, Gironde
Situated at the top of a limestone plateau, Château Coutet is a long-standing Saint-Émilion grand cru and has been a family property for more than four hundred years spanning 16 hectares, 11.5 of which are vineyards. No chemical treatment – artificial pesticide, insecticide or weedkiller – has ever been used. In 2012, the estate obtained organic farming certification for its soil- and vine-friendly work. The harvests are carried out by hand. The areas between the vines, which are grassed eight months a year, encourage biodiversity. Indigenous yeasts and natural bacteria are used. The wine is matured in barrels with the least possible intervention and without filtering.
Guided tour: Saturday 9 October at 2:30 p.m.
On the occasion of the Fête de la science, this visit to the grounds of Château Coutet, devoid of all traces of chemicals, reports the scientific research carried out on the estate. The visit shows how, in each season, a particular flora and fauna develop and raise many questions. How the farm, turned towards the future and new ecological technologies, makes its land available to research laboratories ... In addition, the preservation of a large and diversified tree cover, cohabiting with the vines, contributes to the maintenance of a varied and abundant animal presence. Moreover, the vines come from mass selection. These are all the factors that make it possible to re-examine the climate impacts and the presence or disappearance of species in our territories.
